On Saturday 12th February at Drumsurn GAC, The Roe Valley Development Squad had its first Strength and Conditioning session, learning the proper techniques in strength training exercises with an emphasise on core stability. Each player has a weekly programme to follow to help them become fitter and stronger for the incoming year

Club Derry Hurling and Football Development squads Strength and Conditionin

Sessions are up and running every Tuesday night in Drumsurn GAC. The numbers are light but the lads that are turning up are going well, learning the proper techniques in strength training exercises with an emphasise on core stability.Each player has a weekly programme to follow to help them become fitter and stronger for the incoming year.Weekly sessions run from 6.30pm to 9pm. Derry Retain the Buncrana Cup For First Time in Competition's History

On Saturday the Club Derry Under 15 Football Development squad attended Drumsurn for a Strength and Conditioning session with Richard Ferris and Seamus Doyle, 20 lads attended and thoroughly enjoyed the session

Club Derry Under 14 Hurlers Lift National B Shield

The Derry Under 16 and Under 14 Development squads were in action last weekend (Sat 28^thAug) at the National blitzes.

The under 16 squad were in Mullingar where they had a promising start beating Wicklow by a goal in their opening game. They lost their remaining two league games to a very strong Wexford side and then by a single point to Meath. This left the lads in the ‘shield’ semi-final where they were due to play Roscommon. Again the lads put up a very good show but lost out by just 3 points. The squad were missing a few key players on the day, for a variety of reasons, but overall the management team of Paddy McEldowney, John O’Dwyer and Kieran Stevenson were very pleased with the effort the lads put in.

The under 14 squad were in Port Laoise on the same day. They lost their first two group matches against Kildare and Carlow respectively. This left the lads in the ‘shield’ section where they were in a group with Meath, Wicklow, Roscommon and Mayo. The lads won their semi final match against Mayo by ten points to set up a final appearance against a very strong Wicklow side. Going into injury time of what had been an excellent game of hurling, the sides were level, when team captain Fergal Irwin ran half the length of the field to score a winning goal with the final puck of the game. The lads thoroughly enjoyed their days hurling and all the lads deserve a lot of praise for the way the preformed on the day. A special word of thanks to the parents who travelled the long distance to give their support and to Gerard Finnegan and Darragh McCloskey who were part of the management team for the day.

Derry Retain the Buncrana Cup For First Time in Competition's History

Was this the day Derry's young players made a state-ment of their intent? Only time will answer that question. However, from the moment Limavady's Dessie Loughrey finished a rebound to the net to repel Donegal's final assault, this Derry squad had one hand on the Buncrana Cup. Ten minutes later it was two.

If it's true that adversity can either make or break a team, then the fact that when facing a highly rated Donegal outfit Derry had a host of injuries and omissions, as well as being without both midfielders from the semi-final, speaks volumes for the character and fighting spirit of this group of players.

Having qualified for the final stages with victories over Fermanagh and Armagh, Derry faced a tough Monaghan team at Muff GAC. After a bright opening Derry took an early lead. Indeed, had the finishing in front of goal been more clinical, this game could have been over midway through the first half. With the Farney starting to gain a stronghold around the middle, Derry were rocked back by a Mona-ghan goal to leave only two points between the sides at the break.

After trading early scores in the second half and with some changes in personnel, Derry took a vice-like grip of this game thanks to the dominance of midfielders McAtamney and Gorman. With McNicholl and Moore accurate up front, the key moment of the game came after a surging run by Loughrey down the right hand side. The Limavady man centred to Claudys Blaine Carlin who was fouled whilst rounding the Monaghan goal-keeper. The resultant penalty kick was clinically dispatched by Conor McAtamney to give Derry the cushion they needed. The game ended Derry 1-13 Monaghan 1-5.

The win was not without a downside however as Derry‟s penalty taker suffered concus-sion ruling him out of the final against Donegal in Buncrana. Further injuries and fatigue due to a hard week of club action meant Derry‟s management team now had to earn their corn.

The team was drastically changed for the final drawing upon the entire resources of the squad. With Conor Murphy moved to midfield (where his father Plunkett led Derry to Anglo-Celt glory in 87) and partnered by centre half forward Gerard Bradley, Derry began the final in bright fashion.

McNicholl and Moore gave an exhibition of long range point taking seemingly hitting the target with every effort. Left and right hand side - same result. At the other end Donegal were also beginning to punch holes in the Derry rearguard. Like the semi final Derry were again hit with a three-pointer which threatened to unbalance their challenge. Despite scoring 0-11 in the first half with a very credible ten points from play, Derry only led by four at half time (0-11 to 1-4).

Further blows were dealt to the squad by the loss of Ryan McDonald and Padraig Cassidy

in the first half. With a strong breeze in their backs for the second half Donegal now had every right to feel confident.

Tactically Derry played possession football in the second period, pinning Donegal in their own half for long periods. Direct running drew frees which were duly converted to keep the scoreboard ticking over. As expected, Donegal got their purple patch midway through the half reducing the deficit to three.

However, Derry dug deep and a 40 yard burst by Darryl Mullan resulted in a saved effort from Neil McNicholl. The keeper could only partially save, and an onrushing Dessie Loughrey finished the ball to the net to stretch the margin to six and effectively finish the game. A battling and gutsy last ten minutes meant Derry would retain the Buncrana Cup for the first time in their history with the trophy handed over to the two Conors (McAtamney and Carville) by Ulster GAA President Aogan Farrell.

If there was ever a victory for an entire squad of players, this was it. This was a victory for heart and determination as much as skill and ability. Long may it continue!

Club Derry Under 17's Show Grit

Today the Club Derry Under 17's took part in their first Ulster blitz of the season. Derry were pitted against Down and Donegal in the blitz that took part in Ballymaguigan.

This was one of three blitz's that took place today. The top teams all qualify for for a final blitz on the 11th September. The second place teams come together to take part in the plate and the third place teams in a shield.

In the first game of the day Down beat Donegal with a few points to spare.

Derry then played Donegal at the 1.30pm throw in. The Derry team that started the Donegal game was as follows:

Derry got off to a shaky start and found themselves 4 points down at half time, however after the lads regroup at the interval they got a grip on the game and didn't let it slip. Derry ran out winners 2-10 to Donegal's 3-05

The second game against Down came very quick after the first 50 minutes and it would be fair to say that the Derry players felt the effects.

Derry gifted Down an early goal and it took them 15 minutes of the first have to get the ball out of their own half, it was a terrible start that found Derry 7 points down at the interval. Much of the same for this half time talk again and needless to say the Derry players responded excellently, they gradually got back into the game and had Down hanging on. Derry ran out 1 point winners on a scoreline of 2-11 to 3-07.

We were missing a lot of players today for numerous reasons but the 17 players we had showed unbelievable fighting spirit. A special mention must got to Niall Callan who gratefully step in between the sticks as our two Goal keepers were both out injured.

Busy Weekend @ Owenbeg, Derry Centre of Excellence

On Friday 25 people took part in a Child Protection Awareness course, Saturday was an extremely busy day with 105 young players trialing for the Club Derry Under 15 Panel, 40 players trialing for the Under 16 Panel, 20 new referee's being put through their introduction course and 17 new coaches undertaking the Foundation Coaching Award.

Derry Under 16 Buncrana Cup Winning Team Presentation Night

On Thursday 21st January members from Club Derry and the Derry County Board formally congratulated and thanked the 2009 Under 16 team who won the Buncrana Cup for their efforts, tribute was paid to the players parents for their contibutions and to the coaches Karl Conlan, Martin Boyle, Martin McWilliams and Jason Muldoon who put in a lot of good quality work with the players.

Tony Scullion praised the 2009 for their achievements but suggested with the talent in the squad this group of players shouldn't be settling for a Buncrana Cup Medal. The messgae on the night was loud and clear, "Well done on what you've achieved in 2009, but no one should be happy or satisfied to be remembered as a good Under 16 team, every player needs to get focused and become the best they can be"

All of the players got a jersey sponsored by Club Derry. Chris Collins was keen to emphasis the importance members from Club Derry had this year and will continue to have for the years to come in the development of our young players, "Without you none of this would be possible, young people now are getting a tremendious opportunity to excel within the clubs, schools and County."

Club Derry Under 16 Football Development Squad win Buncrana Cup

On Saturday the Club Derry Under 16 Football development squad won the Buncrana cup for only the second time in the competitions ten year history.

At 11.30am they competed against Monaghan in Naomh Padraig, Muff. The Derry team that started was: Ciaron McLarnon, Odhran Glass, Martin Bradley, Gavin Tallon, Fergal Duffin, Ruairi Moore, Michael Warnock, Nathan Rocks, Conor McAtamney, Anthony O’Neill, Emmett Bradley, Adrian Trainor, Cathair Friel, Shane Farren and Niall Higgins.

The game was played in perfect conditions, however it was Derry who got off to the better start scoring 1-03 in 10 minutes before Monaghan could get on the score sheet, but the stem of attack continued from the men in red with Adrian Trainor scoring Derry’s second goal after 11 minutes to put the Oak leaf men 2-06 to 0-01 up. Both teams then exchanged three points apiece to leave the score at half time Derry 2-06 to 0-04.

The second half was a much cagier contest Monaghan got the opening point to make it 2-06 to 0-05 but that was as close as they came Derry closed the half with a goal and a point to Monaghan’s two points to win the semi final 3-07 to 0-08.

Tyrone took on Armagh in the other semi final at Burt with Tyrone coming out on top on a score line of 3-11 to 2-10


So it was a Derry vs Tyrone Final at Buncrana. Derry only had one change in the final with Glen’s Conor Carville coming in for clubman Odhran Glass. The game began and straight from the throw in Derry started on the attack with Shane Farren and Michael Warnock scoring points in the two minutes. Tyrone however weren’t going to let Derry have it their own way and after 7 minutes they scored a goal from a high ball into the square which wasn’t dealt with. Derry scored three unanswered points to settle the nerves however Tyrone struck again with a goal after 14 minutes to go 0-05 to 2-01 up. This was a crucial stage of the game however credit to the Derry players they dug deep and scored 2-04 to Tyrone’s 3 points in the final 11 minutes to half time leaving Derry in the lead at the interval 1-09 to 2-04.



The opening two minutes of the second half saw Derry and Tyrone exchanging a point each, although from then on Derry took control and never looked back in what was an excellent final. Derry ran out eventual winners 1-20 to 2-07.

I have been looking at the Underage championships and various other things that are on and we are going to run with the following dates for the Club Derry Under 15 and Under 16 Football Development Squad sessions:

Club Derry Under 16 Footballers in Croker

On Wednesday the Club Derry Under 16 Footballers got the opportunity to play on Croke Park. 31 players formed the squad that went down, due to a couple of injuries 29 players stripped out. The players arrived in Croke Park around 12 noon, after a spot of lunch they got changed under the Cusack stand and had a warm up in one of the warm up rooms off the dressing room.

Their first game was against Fermanagh which they won on a scoreline of 3-09 to 2-08. A few late lapses in concentration letting Fermanagh back into the game slightly.

The second game was against Armagh who are in the other side of the Buncrana Cup Semi Final and will face Tyrone. Over the 40 minutes Derry were comfortable winners with a scoreline of 3-09 to 1-03.

Although it was nice to win both games the most important thing was that as many players got to enjoy playing on Croke Park for the day and I know all the lads really enjoyed the experience. Some photos below, more to follow:

Arrival
All buses and spectators' cars should park in the Cusack Stand Car park. Croke Park security staff will be responsible for supervising the car park and all those entering the carpark must adhere to any instructions from security. Entry to the Cusack Stand car park is via Clonliffe Road and St James' Avenue.

The Cusack Stand Changing Rooms will be used throughout the day. There are two changing rooms and the Warm Up Room can also be used for changing. After changing all teams are strongly recommended to remove all their gear from the changing rooms and leave in their buses until after the blitz is over. Please also ensure that the bus is locked and all gear is secure.

The Games
All teams will play two games of 20 minutes each way, with a quick turnaround at half time in each game. Teams are not permitted to leave the pitch at half time

Counties should please note that this is a fun blitz, with the emphasis on participation not winning.The blitz must run on time to ensure that everyone enjoys the day. It will therefore be necessary to reduce the playing time if teams are late. Teams that are not playing are asked to remain seated in the Cusack Stand.

Team Photographs
There will be an opportunity for spectators/parents to take team photographs at the end of each blitz. Photos will be taken at the sideline and photographers must remain in the Cusack Stand to take their photographs

Food
All players must bring a substantial packed lunch to keep you going during the day. The bus will stop in the Glenavon on the road home at approximately 6.30pm. We are responsible for clearing up any mess that we make so I would ask all mentors to ensure that the teams and spectators use the bins provided.

Museum and Stand Tours
2.45pm - Max 115 with 10 mentors – Armagh, Fermanagh & Derry
Mentors will be expected to act in a supervisory capacity and assist the tour guide with the group. The museum visit & stand tour would take one hour in total. Parents are not entitled to join the museum and stand tours that have been organised for the teams

Departure
The bus will leave Croke Park at 4pm, stop at the Glenavon at 6.30pm and should be back in Dungiven at 8.00pm

Two Visits to Croke Park in the One Week!!

The Under 16 Football and Under 16 Hurling Club Derry Development Squads will again this year get the opportunity to play on Croke Park. Both squads will be invited to headquarters for a day to take part in a blitz, get a stadium tour and learn about the history of the Jones Road venue.
The Under 16 Hurling Development Squad day is on Monday 6th July and the Under 16 Football Development Squad day is Wednesday 8th July.

Club Derry Development Squad to hold summer trials

DERRY minor manager Richard Ferris will hold trials on Saturday 20th of June for under-17s not currently on the development squad as the preparations for 2010 begin.
Drumsurn man Ferris, whose minors fell agonisingly short in their Ulster championship clash with Monaghan last month is planning for next year, with trials for those wishing to join the under-17 panel, who have not been working along with this year’s minor panel since training began in March, to be held on Saturday 20 June at Glen (11am).
“This will cut down on the trials needed at the start of next year. I’d rather trial the boys when they’re playing competitive football than in the wind and rain in January and February, when they’re not active. Anyone who thinks they’re in with a shot should come along,” said Ferris.
Now that the minors’ season is finished, the onus falls on their young counterparts, some of whom were involved against the Farney men.
Ferris has appealed for his players to give themselves a head start ahead of the 2010 campaign, and asked that anyone who needs transported to get in contact with him.
“We’re already looking forward to 2010 and we want to get the boys ready for it before the football finishes this season. We want to put a foundation there in terms of strength and conditioning, and we want the strongest possible panel to be available to us for under-17 blitzes in August,” added the All-Ireland ’93 winner.
“It’s very important that the elite players at the top clubs buy into the development squad system. I’d appeal to the clubs and coaches to make sure that their players are there. The development squads have a big future, with the work that Chris Collins [Games Development Manager] and Club Derry are doing.”

Fitness Testing Demonstration by Toca Sports

Toca Sports will be conducting a fitness test for the Club Derry Under 16 Football Development Squad on Saturday 6th June at 12pm in Roe Valley Leisure Centre, Limavady. Club coaches are invited to attend and observe. After the fitness test Robert Carroll from Toca sports will take any questions on the equipment they provide to carry out the fitness tests.

Club Derry Hurling Under 14 Development Squad

The Club Derry Under 14 Hurlers took part in their first Ulster Blitz of the year in Owenbeg. Derry had two teams taking part. They competed against Armagh, Antrim, Down, Donegal and Fermanagh.
