A word of thanks to all the teams that took part, to Emmett Stewart who coordinated the event on the day, to our two referee's father and son combination Michael McGill senior and junior and to Club Derry for supporting the competition. Gaelic Start Taster Camps

What is the Gaelic Start Programme?
It's full 16 week programme whereby coaches will go into clubs and demonstrate good practice with children aged 5 to 8 years old. Children will develop their fundamentals and learn sport specific skills related to Gaelic Football, Hurling and Camogie. The programme is as much to encourage new volunteers / coaches to come and take part and develop as it is about the children.

Over the summer we have offered to provide clubs with a taster of the Gaelic Start Programme. We hope to visit clubs for two days during the summer to give them an idea as to what it's all about.

So far we've ran Gaelic Start camps in Bellaghy, Celtic Park and Swatragh (Pic Below). By the end of the summer we hope to visit as many clubs as we can get squeezed in.

From October onwards we hope to run the Gaelic Start programme in it's entirety in as many clubs as we can.

City Oaks Hurling with Kevin Kelly

Bright and early on Sunday morning the Hurling City Oaks got underway with Kevin Kelly deliving the session. Players from Na Magha and the surrounding Inishowen clubs thoroughly enjoyed the session. Here's what one coach who attended the City Oaks had to say:

"Just a couple of lines to thank you for your coaching session with the U14s in Celtic Park yesterday morning. It was both informative, and enjoyable, and to me that is the 2 most important things for any coaching session. I know that our boys enjoyed it - and hopefully learned something as well!! It was good to see you concentrating on "real" things such as how to dispossess players without fouling as these are the things that win and lose matches - and I was glad to see you correcting the use of foul language as well. Anyway, keep up the good work - it will bear fruit for Derry and Ulster hurling somewhere down the line."

Thanks Kevin! The next session will be delivered by Derry Senior Hurling Captain Kevin Hinphey on Saturday 22nd August in Celtic Park

Club Derry Under 14 Hurling 7's Competition

On Saturday we held the Club Derry Under 14 Hurling 7 aside competition at Owenbeg. 7 clubs took part in what was a good mornings hurling.
The A Final was contested by Na Magha and Banagher. With the City side picking up a well deserved victory.

The B Final drew up Donegal Men, St. Eunan's Letterkenny against the men from Coleraine, Eoghan Rua and it was to be the visitors who travelled home with the cup after a closely fought final.

A special word of thanks should go the referee's who ensured the smooth running of the event and to Kevin Hinphey who coordinated the competition.

City Oaks Football with Barry Dillon

On Saturday 18th July the City Oaks Football programme got underway. 22 players from clubs within Derry City Council took part in the session led by Derry Under 21 Coach Barry Dillon and assisted by Paul Simpson, Emmett Stewart and Chris Collins. The focus of the session was defensive play. I sure the players and coaches really enjoyed the session at Celtic Park. Some pictures below:

Rounders is now much formally integrated into the Cúl Camp program and all of the youngsters will welcome an extra period of participation in the game. No doubt the Cúl Camp Coaches will learn a lot from the children in the above school/club areas, making for more fun filled and satisfactory involvement by all.

Thanks to Peadar Ó Túatain, GAA Rounders Development Officer for the information.

Doire Colmcille Summer Camp

More than 50 kids took part in Doire Colmcille's Annual Summer scheme held in St Columbs College, Derry from the 6th to 10th July. The week started bleak with the weather forcing the camp onto gravel for the first day, but as the week progressed the weather got better and the kids were able to get onto the grass and show off their Gaelic skills.

The kids ranged from the age of four right up to the age of fourteen, taking part in Gaelic Games, multi sports and the much loved Rounders. It was a great week for all those involved with club coaches and parents helping out the County coaches. The kids consisted of many of their underage players but the camp also attracted many new players to the club and it is hoped these kids will continue with the club.

The week was ended with a multi-sport sports day which all the children thoroughly enjoyed. At the end of the camp all the kids were presented with club t-shirts and encouraged to return for saturday training. Special word of thanks to all those from Doire Colmcille who helped with the camp and to Shauna McCallion and Teresa McGirr who coordinated the activities.

Club Derry Under 16 Footballers in Croker

On Wednesday the Club Derry Under 16 Footballers got the opportunity to play on Croke Park. 31 players formed the squad that went down, due to a couple of injuries 29 players stripped out. The players arrived in Croke Park around 12 noon, after a spot of lunch they got changed under the Cusack stand and had a warm up in one of the warm up rooms off the dressing room.

Their first game was against Fermanagh which they won on a scoreline of 3-09 to 2-08. A few late lapses in concentration letting Fermanagh back into the game slightly.

The second game was against Armagh who are in the other side of the Buncrana Cup Semi Final and will face Tyrone. Over the 40 minutes Derry were comfortable winners with a scoreline of 3-09 to 1-03.

Although it was nice to win both games the most important thing was that as many players got to enjoy playing on Croke Park for the day and I know all the lads really enjoyed the experience. Some photos below, more to follow:
